The Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Split, One Week Later: What We Know So Far
The news of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's
split rocked the world one week ago, and the internet is still trying
to make sense of it all. Since the Oscar-winning actress filed for
divorce from the Allied actor, surprising details surrounding the duo's final days as a couple began to emerge.
Here's a recap of everything Us Weekly knows so far about Brangelina's shocking split.
Jolie Files for Divorce
Jolie, 41, filed for divorce from Pitt, 52, in the Los Angeles Superior Court late Monday, September 19, citing irreconcilable differences, after two years of marriage and 12 years together. According to court documents unearthed the next day, she is seeking sole physical custody of the couple's six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8. Jolie, who is being represented by powerful Hollywood divorce attorney Laura Wasser, requested that Pitt only get joint legal custody.
"Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for dissolution of the marriage," the actress' rep said in a statement to Us September 20. "This decision was made for the health of the family."
Did Pitt Have an Affair?
Immediately after the surprising news broke, rumors began to swirl that Pitt had an affair with his Allied costar Marion Cotillard. However, a source told Us that the French actress didn't play a role in the split, saying, "Marion had nothing to do with it." Another report alleged that Jolie hired a private investigator to spy on her husband on the set of Allied, but a second source debunked the gossip, adding, "Angelina did not hire a private eye."
Days later, Cotillard, 40, announced via Instagram that she's pregnant with her second child with longtime boyfriend Guillaume Canet. She also addressed the affair rumors, writing, "This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into. ... I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment."
Jolie's Filing Surprised Pitt
Us exclusively revealed September 20 that the Unbroken director made the decision to separate from the Fight Club star only one week prior to her filing. "The final divorce decision was only made one week ago," a source explained. "An incident took place and prompted her to act and file."
Later in the day, a second informant told Us that Pitt was blindsided by Jolie's divorce filing, and didn't find out about her decision until the day of. According to divorce papers, the official date of separation was September 15.
Jennifer Aniston Reacts
Remember when Pitt started dating Jolie while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston? Yeah, that happened. Although the Friends alum, 47, has yet to speak publicly about the Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars' split, a source told Us that she discussed the news with a longtime pal, saying, "Yeah, that's karma for you!" Another insider added that Aniston, now happily married to Justin Theroux, "admittedly feels sort of satisfied ... [but] never wanted this for them or wished this on them."
Pitt Wants Joint Custody of Kids
TMZ reported September 21 that the Moneyball actor plans to fight the Maleficent actress for joint physical custody of their six kids. As fans know, Maddox, Pax and Zahara are adopted, while Shiloh and the twins are the couple's biological children.
Pitt Investigated for Plane Incident
Multiple reports claimed September 22 that Pitt was being investigated for child abuse by the Los Angeles Police Department and the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services following an incident aboard the family's private jet. The LAPD, however, confirmed to Us that it was "not handling any report or allegations into child abuse," while the DCFS was unable to comment.
A source later told Us exclusively that the DCFS was called during the September 14 flight from France to California. Representatives interviewed both Pitt and Jolie
on the tarmac but decided to let them go. The insider added, "[Brad]
knows he is being investigated. ... He does not believe he committed
abuse."
It was then revealed that the FBI was looking into the incident, in which an intoxicated Pitt was allegedly verbally and physically abusive with his children while arguing with Jolie. "The FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued," the agency said in a statement to Us. Insiders then told Us that the alleged altercation was caught on video.
Jolie Blocks Pitt's Phone Number
A source told Us exclusively September 24 that Jolie "blocked all incoming text messages and also Brad's numbers" following her divorce filing. Another informant said Pitt hasn't seen his children since the split, exclusively revealing, "He knows the severity of the allegations and wants to be cleared of abuse before he sees them. He is confident he will be cleared. The kids are asking to see Brad, so he is hoping to see them next week."
Jolie and Kids Hide in L.A. Rental House
Us exclusively reported September 24 that the Girl, Interrupted actress set up a five-bedroom rental house in Los Angeles for herself and her six children before filing divorce documents. The private estate, which previously rented for $95,000 a month, includes a heated pool, a home theater, a separate guest house and a beach nearby. Jolie's new neighbors include Owen Wilson, Sean Penn and Julia Roberts.
Brangelina 'Devastated' by Split
The former power couple are both heartbroken by the divorce, sources told Us. "[Brad is] so torn up and shattered, not only because of the divorce but because he hasn't seen the kids and he really wants to," an insider said September 24. Another source added, "Angelina is devastated that is has come to this but will do everything in her power to protect her family."

Gigi Hadid sprung into action when she was accosted by prankster Vitalii
Sediuk outside the MaxMara show in Milan earlier this month, and while
she received heaps of praise for her decision to elbow the guy and
defend herself, she also oddly drew some backlash. Now, the supermodel
is speaking to Lenny Letter about the incident, and explaining the
course of events as she sees it.
"I played volleyball, and my coaches talked about muscle memory. I
started boxing two years ago and I always remembered that. Since then, I
hadn't been in a situation that forced me to fight back, but it just
came out when he grabbed—me it wasn't a choice. I do have that fighter
in me. Honestly, I felt I was in danger, and I had every right to react
the way I did. If anything, I want girls to see the video and know that
they have the right to fight back, too, if put in a similar situation,"
she wrote in the latest installment.
The catwalker then took the opportunity to call out a journalist who
dared to criticize her decision to act aggressively.
"The first article that was posted about the incident was headlined:
'Not model behavior. Gigi aggressively lashes out and elbows fan in the
face after he tries to pick her up...' That's when I really got pissed.
First of all, it was a woman who wrote the story with that headline.
What would you tell your daughter to do? If my behavior isn't model
behavior, then what is? What would you have told your daughter to do in
that situation?" she fumed.
In the end, she just wants people to realize that sticking up for
themselves is not a bad thing.
"It sounds cliché to say it, but in the moment, it wasn't heroic to me.
It was just what I had to do. It's very touching to me that people see
it that way. I know people are put in much worse situations every day
and don't have the cameras around that provoke social-media support. I
just want to use what happened to me to show that it's everyone's right,
and it can be empowering, to be able to defend yourself," she
concluded.
