NORTH KOREAS' INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIP under Kim Jong-un
The
North Korea state is found in Northeast Asia. The country, is still under
communist rule for decades and rigid state controlled system. Over the years,
its relationship with others states is deteriorating due to conflicts and
failure to adhere to foreign policies. It is under the leadership of Kim Jong-Il,
who took over after the death of his father. In relation to North Korea, there
are different roles that the head of state plays both on the local and
international scenes. Therefore, in this essay we will discuss realism,
liberalism and Marxism as the theoretical perspectives of the North Korean
leader on the world politics.
Realism
as one the theories of international relations, is being self-centered and lack
of adhering to set rules and regulations (Burchill 32). This leader
believes in structural anarchy thus there is no effective global government,
therefore lack of central government to settle disputes (Dunne). He prefers, each
state to take care of its own interests at the cost of others. This leads to
hostile interactions, race for power in order to survive among states, achieved
through military strength at the expense of the economy. He discredits treaties
if they are not beneficial on their end, because there is no overarching
organization to answer to. The states becomes unitary actor, North Korea responds
to external factors than domestic issues about political issues (Kim 34).
In
contrast to realism, liberalism advocates for individual rights, limitations on
the powers of the state and democracy (Jackson 61). Neoliberal
institutionalism, ascertains that states are the cause of cooperation among
them in ensuring international stability. They believe anarchy brings in the
idea of self-help since the parties doubt compliance each other (Dunne). Kim Jong-il argued
that, receiving aid from friends would render him weak, therefore Koreans
should devote themselves to attain wealth and stability (French 42).
Marxism
challenges both state centered features, poverty, war, exploitation internally
and externally among nations (Burchill 91). It emphasizes on
societal classes between nations materialistically, thus creation of a gap
between the rich and the poor. Kim Jong-il reinstated military bureaucracy;
this gives him the opportunity to continue benefiting from the state owned
economy sector. Additionally, the distribution of land by the state continues
to sabotage the landlords economically and enslavement of mass population (Kim 4).
In
conclusion, the international relations theories differ in ideology, for
instance cooperation, economic growth, peace and war. Therefore, the leaders’ perspective
to world politics matters in terms of interdependency and mutual interactions.
Additionally, this leads to creation of tensions between nations and
development of cold war due to the need to grow military wise. In my opinion,
transnational social cultures, institutions economic resources varying in
different states influence world politics.
